Arthrosamid® Injections in Ottawa

Arthrosamid® is a long-acting injectable gel used in select patients with knee osteoarthritis. It is designed to integrate within the joint space and may provide longer-lasting symptom relief compared with temporary injectable treatments. Arthrosamid® injections are available following consultation with Dr. Sonam Maghera.

Procedures are performed in a licensed medical facility in Ottawa. Treatment decisions are made on an individual basis after clinical assessment and imaging review.

What is Arthrosamid®?

Arthrosamid® is a non-biologic injectable polyacrylamide hydrogel (2.5% iPAAG) used for the symptomatic treatment of knee osteoarthritis. Unlike temporary injections that are absorbed over weeks or months, Arthrosamid® is designed to integrate into the synovial membrane of the knee joint, where it can provide long-lasting symptom relief in appropriately selected patients.

It is delivered as a single intra-articular injection and is intended for patients who are seeking a non-surgical option for knee osteoarthritis.

How does Arthrosamid® work?

In knee osteoarthritis, the synovial membrane often becomes inflamed, fibrotic, and less elastic. This contributes to pain, joint swelling, reduced mobility, and progression of symptoms.

Arthrosamid® is designed to biomechanically increase synovial elasticity. After injection into the joint:

  • The gel disperses within the synovial fluid

  • It is transported into the synovial sub-intima via normal synovial transport mechanisms

  • Over several weeks, it becomes integrated within the synovial tissue, forming a stable scaffold that increases tissue elasticity

This change in synovial mechanics is thought to reduce pain drivers associated with osteoarthritis and support improved joint function over time.

How long does Arthrosamid® last?

Clinical studies have demonstrated statistically and clinically meaningful pain reduction following a single Arthrosamid® injection, with benefits maintained for up to five years in some patients.

Symptom improvement is typically gradual and may begin within the first few weeks, continuing to evolve over several months.

As with all osteoarthritis treatments, individual responses vary.

Who may be a candidate for Arthrosamid®?

Arthrosamid® may be considered for adults with:

  • Symptomatic knee osteoarthritis confirmed clinically and radiographically

  • Persistent pain despite conservative management

  • Limited or short-term benefit from corticosteroid or hyaluronic acid injections

  • A desire to delay or avoid knee replacement surgery

Patient selection is important. Arthrosamid® is not appropriate for every patient with knee pain or arthritis, and a consultation is required to determine suitability.

How is the injection performed?

Arthrosamid® is administered as a single intra-articular knee injection, typically using image guidance to ensure accurate placement within the joint.

The procedure is performed under sterile conditions in a licensed medical facility. If a joint effusion is present, it may be aspirated prior to injection. The total injected volume is 6 mL, delivered during one treatment session.

Arthrosamid® compared with other knee injections

There are several injectable options used for knee osteoarthritis, each with different mechanisms and expected duration of benefit:

  • Corticosteroid injections – typically short-term pain and inflammation relief

  • Hyaluronic acid (viscosupplementation) – temporary improvement in joint lubrication

  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) – biologic treatment using autologous blood products

  • Arthrosamid® – a non-biologic injectable implant designed for longer-lasting symptom relief

No single treatment is best for all patients. Choice depends on clinical findings, prior treatments, symptom severity, and patient goals.

Safety and evidence

Arthrosamid® has been studied for over two decades, with long-term follow-up data up to 10 years showing a favorable safety profile. Across studies, there were no signals of systemic adverse effects, allergic reactions, or implant migration, and no increase in complications during later knee replacement surgeries when required.

As with any intra-articular injection, transient pain, swelling, or stiffness may occur.
